Our friend and comrade Charlie Barksdale has been through a lot of changes in recent months.  Due to his medical condition, he has been moved to Autumn Winds Retirement Lodge in Schertz, Texas (San Antonio area). To encourage his recovery, we are inviting visits from his friends.  Sharing great memories, laughs, and conversation will help to accelerate Charlie’s recovery.  “Hangin’ with Charlie” is a sincere effort to increase his continued improvement! Please sign up to visit Charlie!  If you are not able to visit, a Goodie Box is available at the VFW to drop off greeting cards, gifts, or a gift card (Hooter’s, Olive Garden, Chili’s, VISA/MC).  Gift cards will help his daughter Terry bring Charlie his favorite takeout or personal items he needs. Keeping the number of vis...

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of United States again called for an end to the government shutdown this morning alongside other veteran and military service organizations at a press conference at the National World War II Memorial. Speaking alongside VFW Legislative Director Ray Kelley were representatives from the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and The Military Coalition, which includes the VFW and 32 other veteran and military service organizations who represent more than 5.5 million veterans, service members and families. “The lack of a budget for the Veterans Benefits Administration me...

The Pentagon unveiled its budget proposal for fiscal year 2014 yesterday, outlining how the Obama Administration wants to fund the Department of Defense in the coming year. The national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. immediately fired back at the proposal, which he says breaks faith with our military retirees and their loved ones. “The VFW recognizes that the Pentagon has tough decisions to make about its budget, but the proposals in this year’s budget breaks faith with our volunteers by further burdening our military retirees and our military families,” said John E. Hamilton, who leads the 2 million-member VFW and its Auxiliaries. “The VFW has long believed that trying to find savings from health care accounts and military pay threatens to hollow out the all...

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is applauding yesterday’s Senate passage of H.R. 4057, the Improving Transparency in Education for Veterans Act, a bill designed to improve consumer protections for student-veterans who use their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. The bill must now go back to the House for final approval before heading to the White House for the president’s signature. “The VFW has worked diligently over the past year to build consensus among other veterans’ groups and education advocates to ensure we provide student-veterans with quality consumer information and consumer protections when they seek to use their earned GI Bill benefits,” said VFW National Commander John Hamilton, a combat wounded Vietnam veteran. “We’re proud the Senate took this issue serious...

Life is a never ending series of choices made from experience. I would like to express my thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for the great job they did in the last “Casino Night” at the Post. Their experience from the one’s before made this one a success. I might ad that although the turn out was not as big as they would have liked it to be, they did very well. Thank you again Ladies. You make it very easy for me to do my job. I would also like to thank the Men’s Auxiliary for their part in helping the Ladies with the set up and clean up. Our Men’s Auxiliary is also why I feel I am successful. With out these two organizations this Post would indeed not be where we are today. There were also some VFW members that pitched in as well. Thank you very much for your participation. I am ver...

Well it seems to me that when we want something bad enough we can, and do put things together to get it done. The sad part of this is we have members whose only agenda is to come to meetings and vote the way their "buddies" tell them to vote. This simply is not right. They have no other dealings with Post business and when they leave, the ones that are left here to live with those decisions. That just does not seem fair or right. I simply can't understand how some one could do that and not feel just a little guilty. The question then becomes "whose side are you on?" Well, to be perfectly frank, there are NO sides. There is just the Post, and the Post must survive if we are to accomplish those goals and requirements set forth by National. We MUST be one at what we do, or simply nothing will...
