The Veterans of Foreign Wars of United States again called for an end to the government shutdown this morning alongside other veteran and military service organizations at a press conference at the National World War II Memorial. It was the first time the veteran and military service organization community had united with one voice to demand that Congress and the White House stop their bickering and to pass a budget. The Pentagon unveiled its budget proposal for fiscal year 2014 yesterday, outlining how the Obama Administration wants to fund the Department of Defense in the coming year. The national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. immediately fired back at the proposal, which he says breaks faith with our military retirees and their loved ones. “The VFW recognizes that the Pentagon has tough decisions to make about its budget, but the proposals in this year’s budget breaks faith with our volunteers by further burdening our military retirees and our military families,” said John E. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is applauding yesterday’s Senate passage of H.R. 4057, the Improving Transparency in Education for Veterans Act, a bill designed to improve consumer protections for student-veterans who use their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. The VFW Publications Department announced today that it is accepting submissions for VFW’s 2012 National Publications Contest. All publications will be categorized by the membership size of the Department, District or Post they represent. Below is a break down of each catagory. Departments will be defined as: large (24,000 or more members) medium (10,000-23,999) small (9,999 or fewer) Districts will be defined as: large (2,100 or more) medium (1,300-2,099) small (1,299 or fewer) Posts will be defined as: large (180 or more) medium (100-179) small (99 or fewer) Contest Entry All national entries must place first in Department-level contests.
